AGE LIMITATIONS IN FEDERAL PROGRAMS

WHEREAS, the selection and approval of teaching personnel to participate in the many federal government subsidized institutes and other educational graduate programs are based, in part, on age (many set age maximum at 45); and

WHEREAS, such age qualifications discriminate against those teachers who are approaching or engaged in the second half of their teaching careers, and

WHEREAS, the second half of a teaching career is as important as the first; in fact, the second half, in many respects, is the period in which additional preparation is most needed and could be of greatest advantage to teachers and students; and

WHEREAS, the financial responsibilities of the older teachers are as great and often greater than those of their younger peers; and

WHEREAS, the accelerating changes in education and knowledge necessitate constant review, revision and improvement throughout the whole teaching career:

RESOLVED, that the AFT condemn maximum age limitations as a condition for participation in all federal government subsidized educational pro­grams.
