AFT Resolution

AFT RETIREES¾PARTNERS IN POLITICAL ACTION

WHEREAS, it is well known that a greater number of retirees vote in federal, state and local elections than any other age group; and

WHEREAS, AFT retirees in chartered retiree organizations number more than 60,000 and are the fastest-growing segment of AFT members; and

WHEREAS, under Federal Election Commission regulations, AFT retirees in chartered retiree organizations may participate in their local union’s or state federation’s political action campaigns and political fundraising efforts; and

WHEREAS, these retired members constitute a valuable resource in such activities:

RESOLVED, that AFT and its affiliates encourage retired members to become actively involved in COPE both as contributors and volunteers; offer them the opportunity to participate in phone banks, literature distribution and other political activities of the organization; and provide for their training in these endeavors.
