AFL-CIO AND RIGHT TO STRIKE

WHEREAS, the right to strike is an inalienable right of all free men; and

WHEREAS, various states and the Federal government deny this right to their employees; and

WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO must maintain this right at all times for everyone's self-interest; and

WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO program as presented to the Democratic and Republican party conventions does not include advocacy of the right of public employees to strike; and

WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO has supported legislation which would provide for binding compulsory arbitration, instead of the right to strike;

RESOLVED, that American Federation of Teachers delegates to the coming AFL-CIO convention raise these issues at the convention, and call upon the AFL-CIO to include the right of public employees to strike in its platform; and

RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution to be sent to all appropriate bodies.
