AFT Resolution

AFFIRMATIVE EDUCATION AS A REQUIREMENT IN TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS

 WHEREAS, learned bigotry from outside the school setting must be counteracted by lessons on good citizenship and intergroup relations; and

WHEREAS, the training of teachers to deal with the various and sometimes violent manifestations of bigotry and fear must be continued; and

WHEREAS, in many states, courses in intergroup relations are not required as part of teacher certification programs or in orientation programs for other educational employees:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers support the inclusion of affirmative intergroup relations techniques as a valuable component of teacher certification programs and in orientation programs for educational employees and staff development sessions.
