AFT Resolution

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

WHEREAS, AFT policy supports affirmative action; and

WHEREAS, while the AFT has made progress in increasing the total number of minority staff members in recent years, for example the total number of minority employees in the AFT has increased from 13 percent in 1979 to the current level of 26 percent, the AFT recognizes the need to encourage the placement of minority employees at all staff levels; and

WHEREAS, employment opportunities at the AFT currently are posted as required by the staff contract and are sent to AFT executive council members:

RESOLVED, that the AFT commit itself to recruiting and hiring qualified minority and women employees in all job categories; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT, to help facilitate this resolution, seek the help of state federations to secure applications for available jobs and request their assistance in implementing this policy.
