AFT Resolution

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

WHEREAS, affirmative action was created by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to correct a long standing inequity in the American society with respect to employment and economic opportunities for minorities and women; and

WHEREAS, there has been a general retreat from this positive direction led by the President of the United States:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers continues to recognize the need for affirmative action programs designed to guarantee equal access to jobs, that embrace recruitment, hiring, training, upgrading and promotion; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers condemns all actions which signal a retreat from efforts to make this a just society, economically and socially, for all citizens.
