WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement after the announcement of a bipartisan gun safety framework:
“Yesterday, tens of thousands of people marched for our lives—and today a bipartisan group of senators has acted. We said not one more student, not one more educator, not one more community should be ravaged by the horror of gun violence. We believe what the House of Representatives passed last week accomplishes that goal. However, at this time of crisis, when educators and kids can’t be assured their schools are safe, the standard should not be ‘is this everything we want?’ but ‘will this save lives?’ This bipartisan Senate framework meets the moment—and must be approved by Congress and signed into law as quickly as possible.”
