AFT Responds to Neo-Nazi Rally in Washington

WASHINGTON—In response to this weekend’s events, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, Secretary-Treasurer Lorretta Johnson and Executive Vice President Mary Cathryn Ricker issued the following statement:

“One year ago today, our country watched in horror as dark forces descended on Charlottesville and reminded us how real racism is in America today. This weekend, those forces are gathering in our nation’s capital, but thankfully, thousands of counterprotestors will be rallying to make clear: Hatred has no home here.

“These moments call for moral clarity, and for us to stand unequivocally against racism, anti-Semitism, bigotry and all forms of hatred. The fight for freedom and justice is a fight on behalf of every human being, particularly those who continue to feel marginalized and oppressed while President Trump occupies the White House.

“America is stronger when we embrace our diversity and work to ensure opportunity for everyone, and at the AFT, that is what we will continue to fight for.”
