WASHINGTON—Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on the reforms passed by the Democratic National Committee:
“The Democratic Party took a step today to change its rules to ensure that it is, in perception and in reality, connected to the aspirations and dreams of the people of the United States. While Trump’s Republican Party has become the party of the 1 percent, the party of corruption and wealth over fairness, and the party of cruelty over decency, the Democratic Party wants to do more than play a check-and-balance role. We are the party of a living wage, a secure retirement, quality healthcare, good public schools and affordable college, and a vibrant democracy in the workplace and in America. Values are essential, but so are the steps we take to connect with voters. As a so-called superdelegate, I feel strongly that the reforms passed by the DNC will strengthen the connection between our values and our voters. These reforms will ensure that the voices of those who vote in the presidential primary and caucus process are the principal voices heard in the nomination process.”
