WASHINGTON—Statement of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the introduction of the Grow American Incomes Now (GAIN) Act by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio):
“Americans need good jobs that pay a living wage. But working families’ wages have remained stagnant for decades, and too many low-wage workers are living paycheck to paycheck and often need to choose between putting food on the dinner table and paying the electricity. The GAIN Act expands the Earned Income Tax Credit, a proven, successful program with bipartisan support, which will boost the wages of working people so they can support themselves and their families.
“Rep. Ro Khanna and Sen. Sherrod Brown have the right approach with the GAIN Act to support working people and boost our economy, which stands in stark contrast with President Trump’s tax plan, which would provide large tax cuts to the wealthy and big corporations by cutting Medicare, Medicaid and public education. If Trump were serious about helping working people, he’d abandon his agenda of tax cuts for the rich and come out to support the GAIN Act and work with Congress to turn it into law.”
