NATIONWIDE—This week, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten begins an ongoing celebration of public service workers as part of Public Service Recognition Week. The AFT represents 125,000 federal, state and local government employees.
AFT President Randi Weingarten said: “During Public Service Recognition Week, we celebrate and champion the vital work of the state, county and municipal employees who keep our services running and our communities strong.
“They are our corrections officers and mental health professionals keeping prisoners and psychiatric patients safe; they are the orderlies conducting statewide COVID-19 testing and tracing; and they are the folks who safeguard our natural resources and keep clean water flowing.
“By protecting and caring for our public and private lands, our public employees both defend democracy and ensure the health of our economy. Their tireless work is what keeps America running.
“We see that work daily as public employees ensure roadways are clear for cars and trucks carrying crucial resources and keep millions using public transportation safe and on time. We laud them this week―and every week.
“During the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, as jobs around the country turned remote, public employees worked on the frontlines to help families and ensure our essential services were maintained, and we are forever in their debt for their brave and selfless efforts.”
