AFT Resolution

SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION TO PROVIDE HEALTH BENEFITS FOR THE UNEMPLOYED

WHEREAS, the Reagan budget has resulted in the layoff of millions of American workers pushing the unemployment rates to an ail time high level exceeding eleven million Americans; and

WHEREAS, the majority of those who have lost their jobs through layoff were dependent upon health insurance coverage provided by their employers. The loss of such coverage has impacted upon these workers and their families. Because most are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare benefits, most unemployed workers and their families do not have any health insurance coverage; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the threat to the health and safety of the unemployed and their families, the economic stability of the health care industry has been severely impacted; and

WHEREAS, the Federation of Nurses and Health Professional/AFT believes that quality health care is an inherent right of every American:

RESOLVED, that the Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals/AFT supports legislation that provides for health care insurance protection for unemployed workers and their families. (Executive Council)
