DOMESTIC PARTNER BENEFITS
WHEREAS, American society has a clear interest in supporting the civil rights of all workers; and
WHEREAS, the AFT has a clear commitment to compensation equity, including "equal pay for equal work"; and
WHEREAS, many employers have benefits policies that discriminate against same-sex and unmarried opposite-sex partners; and
WHEREAS, the provision of such benefits will improve public health and enhance the well-being of American society; and
WHEREAS, such benefits are now provided by many private employers:
RESOLVED, that the AFT assist and encourage AFT states and locals to seek through legislative and collective bargaining processes the extension of health insurance and all other benefits available to the spouses of employees to same-sex and unmarried opposite-sex partners.
