Center for School Improvement Leadership Institute
The AFT’s Center for School Improvement Leadership Institute (CSI) 2025, hosted in collaboration with the United Federation of Teachers Teacher Center, will focus on the critical importance of student engagement as the foundation for student achievement, teacher satisfaction and thriving school communities.
Despite evidence of post-pandemic academic progress, we still see too many indicators of student disengagement, disaffection, disconnectedness, anxiety, violent behaviors and absenteeism, in addition to social media addiction and bullying. As schools work to rebuild and reimagine the learning experience, it is imperative to reignite the spark that drives students to learn and succeed. Student engagement is not inconsequential; it is essential for developing resilient, lifelong learners who are prepared to meet the challenges of the future. “When students are motivated and engaged, they are not only more likely to excel academically, but they also develop the social and emotional skills that are crucial for success in life beyond school,” says AFT President Randi Weingarten, echoing our union’s commitment to fostering environments where every student can thrive.
The 2025 institute will explore strategies and practices aligned to our Real Solutions for Kids and Communities campaign that educators can use to create dynamic, engaging learning environments that inspire all students, regardless of background or ability.
Participants will engage with experts and peers to:
- Share and discover best practices for enhancing student engagement across diverse learning environments.
- Identify barriers to student well-being, ensuring every student can connect meaningfully with their education.
- Explore the role of artificial intelligence, experiential learning, and social and emotional learning in fostering a more engaging and inclusive educational experience.
- Develop actionable plans with practical steps for implementation, supported by a network of educators committed to student engagement and success.
By the end of the institute, teams will leave with a clear plan and the necessary tools to cultivate vibrant learning environments that prioritize student engagement and well-being, ultimately leading to improved student participation, outcomes and stronger school communities.
