AFT Resolution

THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT

WHEREAS, the proposed Equal Rights Amendment, ratified by 35 states, reads: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex...;" and

WHEREAS, in the light of the 1980 election results, a rash of attempts to rescind ratification of the ERA in ratifying states will occur; and

WHEREAS, Congress has consistently regarded such rescissions as invalid;

RESOLVED, that the AFT call upon all its state and local affiliates in the 35 ratifying states to continue to take the lead and work in opposing any attempts to rescind ratification, and in the other 15 states to work with pro-ERA groups to develop strategy and support their efforts.
