SUPPORT FOR RESTORATION OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

For nearly a century the Statue of liberty has stood at the front door of America, a nation of immigrants, welcoming people to her shores. The century has taken its toll and Lady Liberty's gigantic iron framework is severely corroded and has structural problems that need renovation.

Ellis Island has been a living monument to America's immigrant roots. The vast, tiled Great Hall will be restored to its 1918-1924 period. Exhibits will be constructed with historic photographs of that period in American history. Using computer technology and fiber optic graphic displays, the statue's history will be brought to life.

The cost of this renovation is high. Over $230 million in funds is needed from school children and other private citizens, companies and organizations. The AFT has participated with other educational organizations in coordinating support for this fund-raising. This fall, AFT local building representatives will distribute AFT's guide for teachers which is planned to raise awareness and money to support this drive.
