END THE VIOLENCE IN DARFUR

Whereas,tens of thousands of civilians have been murdered; and

Whereas, thousands of women have been raped in Sudan’s western region of Darfur by Sudanese government soldiers and members of the government-supported militia (Janjaweed); and

WHEREAS, two million civilians have been driven from their homes, their villages torched and their property stolen by Sudanese military and Janjaweed; and

WHEREAS, the ethnic and perceived racial basis of the violence has been documented by the U.S. Department of State, the United Nations, independent human rights organizations and international journalists; and

WHEREAS, the Sudanese Khartoum-based government has inflamed ethnic conflict, impeded international humanitarian access, bombed civilians from aircraft, as well as murdered and raped civilians:

resolved, that the American Federation of Teachers show its support for U.N. intervention by implementing the actions suggested by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Committee on Conscience:

keep informed;
contact the media;
communicate with the government;
support relief efforts;
inform other members of the community about the atrocities of the Sudanese government; and
support the ongoing efforts of the museum to draw attention to what is happening in Darfur; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers support other efforts to stop the violence in Darfur.
