AID TO LOCALS WITH MEMBERS IN SICK BUILDINGS

WHEREAS, a "sick building" can be due to allergens, bacteria and viruses; and

WHEREAS, there are no enforceable standards for allergens (fungi, molds, dust mite feces, etc.), bacteria and viruses; and

WHEREAS, without enforceable standards, the resolution of buildings that are "sick" due to allergens must be handled as a political, not a medical, question; and

WHEREAS, some states and local governments do not have the resources to test for allergens, bacteria and viruses, and some states and local governments refuse to perform such tests; and

WHEREAS, the results of such tests may be useful in achieving a political resolution to "sick buildings":

RESOLVED, that the AFT advocate for federal, state and local regulations that protect workers and members of the public from the harmful effects of conducting business in "sick buildings."

RESOLVED, that the AFT advocate for federal attention and funding for research and testing of unhealthy conditions in public buildings.
