AFT Resolution

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT

WHEREAS, the United States Senate passed the Americans with Disabilities Act on Nov. 16, 1989, and, this important legislation is now in hearings held by several committees of the U.S. House of Representatives; and

WHEREAS, Illinois Attorney General Neil Hartigan testified in 1989 before the United States Senate Committee on the Handicapped in support of the Americans with Disabilities Act; and

WHEREAS, many of the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act are already Illinois state law and others need to be; and

WHEREAS, this Act would help to eliminate continued discrimination against children and adults with disabilities:

RESOLVED, that the AFT go on record as one of the national organizations in support of the Americans with Disabilities Act; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT delegates to the next AFL-CIO convention present a similar resolution at that convention.
