OVERRIDE PRESIDENT BUSH'S VETO OF FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE ACT

WHEREAS, the American Federation of Teachers has strongly supported the Family and Medical Leave Act recently passed by the U.S. Congress; and

WHEREAS, the Family and Medical Leave Act provides for unpaid leave and protection for workers to care for newborn or adopted children and to care for seriously ill family members; and

WHEREAS, the United States is the only industrialized country in the world, other than South Africa, that does not provide for family and medical leave for workers; and

WHEREAS, this legislation is in the best interest of American families and American workers; and

WHEREAS, President Bush has broken his pledge to seek protection for workers to care for their families in time of need; and

WHEREAS, on June 29, 1990, President Bush vetoed the Family and Medical Leave Act to please his right-wing supporters:

RESOLVED, that the AFT deplore this anti-family veto; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT urge the House of Representatives and the Senate to override the President's veto and to enact the Family and Medical Leave Act into law.
