EUGENE V. DEBS COMMEMORATIVE STAMP

WHEREAS, June 23, 1993, marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of one of the nation's most significant labor unions¾the American Railway Union; and

WHEREAS, the founder of the American Railway Union, Eugene V. Debs, was a great labor activist who devoted his life to the cause of America's working people; and

WHEREAS, Debs's status as a founder of the American labor movement has been recognized by the Friends of the United States Department of Labor by selecting him a member of the Labor Hall of Fame:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers petition the United States Postal Service to join in the celebration on June 23, 1993, of the founding of the American Railway Union by issuing a commemorative stamp in honor of the union's founder and great American labor leader, Eugene V. Debs.
