AFT Resolution

JUSTICE FOR ASIAN PACIFIC WORKERS

WHEREAS, the Civil Rights Act of 1991 was enacted to reverse the 1988 and 1989 Supreme Court decision that undermined the legal foundation for unlawful discrimination and harassment in the workplace; and

WHEREAS, to ensure passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1991, the Wards Cove vs. Antonio was eliminated in the final legislation; and

WHEREAS, the plaintiff and class members in the Wards Cove vs. Antonio were denied the right of due process and this completely eliminates any appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, the AFT supported the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1991:

RESOLVED, that the AFT support the Wards Cove Act (S. 1962 and H.R. 3748) to restore to the 2,000 Asian Pacific and Native Americans the right to legal redress; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT reaffirm its commitment to the elimination of all forms of employment discrimination.
