AFT Resolution
COLLECTIVE BARGAINING RIGHTS FOR SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers recognize the important role of substitute teachers in the maintenance and continuity of daily education and recognizes that substitute teachers are professional educators who must meet the same standards of professional teaching standards as any other classroom teachers;
RESOLVED, that AFT believe that, like any other workers, substitute teachers must have:
- the right to collectively bargain;
- the right to receive fair compensation for their services;
- the right to employer-paid health and welfare benefits;
- the right to receive professional development from their employers;
- the right to due process prior to discipline or termination; and
- the right to a voice in workplace governance.
RESOLVED, to accomplish these goals, the AFT will actively support efforts of substitute teachers to achieve collective bargaining rights.
