SUPPORT FOR HOUSE RESOLUTION 1591: "THE JOB CREATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE RESTORATION ACT"
WHEREAS, unemployment and poverty are major factors destroying the quality of life of young people and their ability to become productive students; and
WHEREAS, lack of future employment is a primary negative force affecting the motivation of our students to complete their education; and
WHEREAS, unemployment continues to climb unabated throughout much of the country, but especially in decaying urban areas; and
WHEREAS, a fully employed population would contribute significantly to the economy as a whole as well as to the tax base of our cities; and
WHEREAS, stable incomes help guarantee stable families; and
WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO has voted to support HR 1591:
RESOLVED, that the AFT support House Resolution 1591, "The Job Creation and Infrastructure Restoration Act" introduced by Representative Matthew Martinez (D-Calif.), intended to put people to work rebuilding infrastructure and community improvement projects at union wages over the next five years; and
RESOLVED, that the AFT work with congressional representatives to gain support for this bill.
