WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement in response to the failed Senate vote to continue debate on the critical voting rights legislation:

“History will record that tonight, Jan. 19, 2022, 52 members of the U.S. Senate—50 Republicans and two Democrats—refused to see the voter suppression and subversion some states have legislated, the former president’s big lie, the Jan. 6 insurrection, and the existential threat these are to our democracy and way of life.

Shame on them.”
