WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement after the Senate voted to push ahead with a once-in-a-generation bipartisan infrastructure plan:
“Months ago, President Joe Biden made a commitment to work across the aisle to deliver results for working families. This infrastructure framework—which would provide every American with access to reliable high-speed internet and make the largest federal investment in public transit, bridges and clean drinking water—is another step in making good on that promise. If passed, this plan has the potential to create and maintain thousands of well-paying union jobs, modernize and improve our economy, and allow more Americans access to the basic opportunities that help them thrive.
“We thank President Biden for his bold vision of creating a better future for all Americans and his efforts to find a road to progress to help people. Now, Congress has a historic opportunity to rebuild our economy and create a sustainable future for all Americans, and this includes advancing President Biden’s full Build Back Better agenda, addressing the historic neglect facing our schools by incorporating the Reopen and Rebuild America’s Schools Act in the next investment package, and passing the Protecting the Right to Organize Act so that the voices of working people are heard and our nation’s economy works for all of us.”
