WASHINGTON—AFT President Randi Weingarten on the re-election of Sen. Joe Manchin to represent West Virginia in the U.S. Senate:
“Joe Manchin is one of us. When teachers, bus drivers and school employees across all 55 of West Virginia’s counties walked out of their classrooms last year, Joe Manchin was right there with them, calling for better wages for the state’s teachers, who ranked 47th in the country in salary. Sen. Manchin knows that the best way to recruit and retain qualified teachers in West Virginia is to respect the people who work in the classroom every day, and to listen to them.”
AFT-West Virginia President Christine Campbell on Sen. Manchin’s re-election:
“Congratulations to Sen. Joe Manchin and to the voters of West Virginia, who realized the strength of our united voice tonight. In West Virginia, our public schools are more than just classrooms. They are the heart of our community. As the teacher walkouts earlier this year showed the nation, West Virginia education personnel are passionate about their students’ success and having a voice in their profession. We are excited to continue our work with Sen. Manchin to make our public schools places that serve the whole child and to ensure that all of our students receive a high-quality, well-rounded education. We look forward to continuing to work with a senator who is a champion for the working class.”
