DISCRIMINATION AGAINST CULTURALLY UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN
WHEREAS, the obvious correlation of high cultural status with the experience and information necessary for a high I.Q. rating makes group I.Q. testing with rigid formalized tests an unsafe method of determining potential native ability; and
WHEREAS, the concept of human intelligence is of key significance for democratic education; and
WHEREAS, the common misunderstanding of the meaning of intelligence and the misuse of I.Q. tests have tended to restrict the educational opportunities of many of our youth:
RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers protest the use of group I.Q. tests as a discriminatory device against culturally underprivileged children.
