AFT Resolution

PROTECTION FOR TRANSGENDER WORKERS

WHEREAS, transgender workers face employment discrimination including termination and harassment; and

WHEREAS, transgender workers have been denied protection from discrimination in employment when they have sought protections under the categories of sex, gender and/or disability; and

WHEREAS, several cities, counties and states have passed human rights laws protecting transgender workers from discrimination, including the city of Portland, Ore.; Multnomah County, Ore.; Benton County, Ore.; the state of Vermont; and the state of Maine:

RESOLVED, that the AFT and the AFL-CIO lobby for legislation that guarantees nondiscrimination protections for transgender workers; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT research the impact on contract negotiations for expanding the discrimination inventory.
