AFT Resolution

PROFESSIONAL LIBRARY AND MEDIA CENTER

WHEREAS, self-evaluation and teacher growth demands access to adequate educational facilities including access to a professional school library media center which would:

  • provide instructional media and library resources;
  • provide an up-to-date, organized collection of professional literature, instructional materials and other relevant resources for on-the-job training;
  • provide a central location to which teachers can go to prepare their lessons and to do that research which they deem important in the improvement of their professional skills and/or the school's educational program;
  • provide the instructional materials necessary for teachers to carry out their class's instructional programs;
  • keep teachers abreast of the constantly proliferating accumulation of instructional educational materials:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers support the establishment in every public school (primary, elementary, intermediate, junior, middle, academic, comprehensive and vocational high school) of a professional library and media center for the use of the school staff; and

RESOLVED, that this professional library and media center should be a fundamental, indispensable and integral part of the school's central library; and in reality, it should encompass and include the school's library and media center and programs thereof.  (Executive Council)
