ENVIRONMENT
WHEREAS, the life supporting environment on a national and planetary scale is in danger due to a combination of many social, economic and environmental factors; and
WHEREAS, in many instances the same people are responsible for the exploitation of both human beings and the environment; and
WHEREAS, the public is becoming aware of environmental problems but often lacks the background to make environmental decisions; and
WHEREAS, the role of educators is to teach the fundamental interdependence of all life with the environment:
RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers recognize that social, economic and environmental problems are not separate, but different aspects of the same problem; and
RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers' program to attack these fundamental problems include:
the National Office of the American Federation of Teachers shall vigorously support locals in bargaining for environmental education programs,
the National Office and locals of the American Federation of Teachers shall cooperate in the development of environmental programs and materials, K-12,
the National Office of the American Federation of Teachers shall cooperate with locals and clearing houses in disseminating information and aids on a national basis,
the Executive Council of the American Federation of Teachers shall be directed to support such social, economic and environmental legislation as they see fit; and
RESOLVED, that the above be implemented by the American Federation of Teachers' Committee on the Environment. (Executive Council)
