AFT Resolution

WOMEN IN UNION LEADERSHIP

WHEREAS, the contributions of women to the trade union movement are long, honorable, and numerous; and

WHEREAS, the number and proportion of women in leadership in unions is not commensurate with their number:

RESOLVED, that all classroom teachers encourage and prepare their female students as well as male students to participate in unions in their adult working life, and to participate in leadership roles in their unions; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT and its local unions as a matter of policy encourage women members to seek office so that there will be substantially larger numbers of women in leadership positions; and

RESOLVED, that more women unionists who are our friends, neighbors, and colleagues be encouraged to assume union leadership; and

RESOLVED, that we encourage this position in our labor councils.
