AFT Resolution

SEX DISCRIMINATION IN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

WHEREAS, Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments of 1972 states that "No person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance;" and

WHEREAS, Congress has the right under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to enact legislation to outlaw discrimination on account of sex by the states:

RESOLVED, that the AFT leadership urge Congress to act on Title IX regulations in conformity with the policies adopted by this organization; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT commends the Department of Health, Education and Welfare for its attempt to develop enforcement procedures that will eliminate systematic discrimination.
