AFT Resolution
ON VLADIMIR BUKOVSKY
WHEREAS, as teachers and trade unionists, AFT members should be staunch defenders of academic freedom and intellectual freedom and dissent in this country and throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, Vladimir Bukovsky, a Russian citizen, has been imprisoned most of his adult life for protesting the repression of intellectuals; and
WHEREAS, Bukovsky is presently in Vladimir prison, seriously ill, serving a sentence for publicizing the psychiatric abuses in Soviet mental institutions; and
WHEREAS, Amnesty International has initiated an international campaign to gain Bukovsky's release:
RESOLVED, that the AFT issue a statement in support of Bukovsky's immediate release.
