AFT Resolution

PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION

WHEREAS, labor unions have long been in the forefront in fighting for equal treatment of all workers; and

WHEREAS, the American Federation of Teachers regards the prohibition of pregnancy related discrimination as essential to the ultimate equality of women in the workplace:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers calls for and will support state and federal legislation extending coverage to women physically unable to work because of pregnancy the same disability benefits available to all temporarily disabled workers; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers will also support legislation forbidding insurance companies from excluding or providing reduced coverage for maternity related medical costs and that all locals be encouraged to negotiate such protection in their collective bargaining agreements.
