REORGANIZING AND DOWNSIZING OF THE PUBLIC SECTOR WORKFORCE

WHEREAS, government needs to be responsive to changing times and has to take responsibility to provide effective services to the public; and

WHEREAS, the public sector is experiencing cutbacks, downsizing and reorganizing similar to the private sector; and

WHEREAS, public employees are dedicated to public service and are not motivated by profit or political patronage; and

WHEREAS, public employees have a responsibility to ensure that government provides quality services; and

WHEREAS, downsizing and reorganizing government leads to layoffs, involuntary transfers and major restructuring of employees' work responsibilities and environment:

RESOLVED, that AFT work to publicly promote the quality service that public employees provide; and

RESOLVED, that AFT assist its locals in promoting the fundamental union role of protecting its members during reorganizing and downsizing in the public sector.
