AFT Resolution

TESTING AND ADMISSION TO PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION

WHEREAS, all students should have access to higher education suited to their needs and purposes; and

WHEREAS, ability to profit from higher education experience is best determined through actual exposure and trial; and

WHEREAS, certain tests and devices, useful for placement and identification of need, may subvert this access if used for screening of admission:

RESOLVED, that performance on literacy tests or other diagnostic instruments should not be used as a barrier to enrollment in public institutions of higher education, but should be used together with other procedures for placement of students at proper competency levels.
