AFT Resolution

REAFFIRMATION OF TENURE PROTECTION

WHEREAS, the right to academic freedom is preserved under the system of tenure,

WHEREAS, the law governing the rights of tenure provide for dismissal when incompetence or inappropriate conduct has been proven,

WHEREAS, the system of tenure establishes a probationary period during which a candidate may be evaluated thoroughly:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers strongly opposes any attempt to substitute any other system for the tenure system now in existence or reduce the historic protections of tenure in any way.
