AFT Resolution

OBJECTIONS TO CALIFORNIA STATE INITIATIVES ON NOVEMBER BALLOT

WHEREAS, the AFT is already on record against Proposition 13 (Jarvis-Gann) type tax measures which were passed in California in 1978; and

WHEREAS, the AFT is already on record in favor of busing when necessary to desegregate our school systems; and

WHEREAS, a special election has been called for November in California with the express purpose of putting before the electorate two statewide initiatives; one called the "Spirit of 13" which limits state spending among other things, and the other limiting the use of busing to desegregate the public schools:

RESOLVED, that the AFT take a position against these two initiatives and use all of its powers to support California teachers' efforts in fighting these initiatives.
