AFT Resolution

SCHOOL FINANCE IN CALIFORNIA AND LAID-OFF TEACHERS

WHEREAS, California's Proposition 13 has forced the state of California to assume major responsibility for financing the public schools; and

WHEREAS, the governor and the legislature have not yet acted to assure any funding for the next school year; and

WHEREAS, the threat of major cutbacks in school funding has resulted in teacher layoffs throughout the state, including San Francisco, where nearly 30 percent of all teachers have already been laid off:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers' convention, assembled in San Francisco, calls upon California's governor and the state legislature to act immediately to provide the funds necessary to return all laid-off teachers and other school employees to their jobs and to insure that quality education will continue in all of California's public schools; and

RESOLVED, that AFT President Shanker take the necessary steps to see that this resolution is communicated to the governor and the legislature immediately.
