Adjunct Faculty at Community College of Vermont Vote For Union Representation

BURLINGTON, Vt.—Adjunct faculty at the Community College of Vermont voted overwhelmingly today to be represented by AFT Vermont, citing the need for job stability, improved pay and greater respect.

“This is a huge step forward for the 537 adjunct faculty at the Community College of Vermont, who are seeking fairness and higher-quality working conditions so that they can provide the best educational experience possible for their students,” said AFT Vermont President Deb Snell.

AFT Vermont also represents faculty at the state colleges in Vermont.

“One faculty member has little or no power to achieve better conditions, but a union representing 537 educators has the power to negotiate for sustainable pay, access to benefits, job stability, and the respect all adjuncts deserve,” said Emily Casey, who teaches English at CCV.

AFT President Randi Weingarten said, “Collective bargaining is about improving people’s lives—both educators and the students they teach. When adjuncts have decent pay and improved working conditions, they won’t have to cobble together teaching gigs around the state just to make ends meet.”
