WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten released the following statement on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All proposal:

“It’s well past time that we join the more than 30 countries guaranteeing universal access to affordable, high-quality healthcare. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All bill offers a path to achieve this goal. As a union of nurses and health professionals, we are solidly behind it.

“At the same time, it’s critical that we continue to resist Donald Trump’s attempts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act and return us to a time when families were one illness away from bankruptcy. And we must continue to take immediate steps to build upon our current system, including stabilizing the insurance markets, preserving Medicaid expansion for older Americans and protecting patients with pre-existing conditions.”
