WILLIAM H. SIMONS
WHEREAS, William Simons has contributed much of his life's work toward the advancement of the cause of teacher unionism; and
WHEREAS, he led the Washington Teachers Union to the first collective bargaining contract for teachers in the Nation's Capital; and
WHEREAS, he has volunteered on numerous occasions to speak and work with other AFT locals in collective bargaining elections and strikes and to help them in many difficult situations; and
WHEREAS, Bill has led the AFT and many locals toward the fulfillment of human rights for minorities and, indeed, human rights for all citizens; and
WHEREAS, he has served many years as AFT vice president, bringing to the executive council his advice gained through his service; and
WHEREAS, he has served as a leader in many aspects of life in the Nation's Capital, including attempts to secure full voting rights for citizens:
RESOLVED that the convention recognize William Simons' contributions in making us a better union, our schools more effective and our country a better place to live and work. We also wish him well in his busy life as a retiree.
