TAKE OUR DAUGHTERS TO WORK DAY
WHEREAS, two out of three new entrants into the workforce will be women by the year 2000, many of whom may be in low-paying jobs with little opportunity for advancement; and
WHEREAS, research has shown that young adolescent girls often doubt their competence and importance, which results in young women having diminished goals and motivation; and
WHEREAS, an event that focuses on girls' talents, ideas and dreams will help young women believe in themselves and their potential for the future:
RESOLVED, that the AFT endorse "Take Our Daughters to Work Day," a national event on the fourth Thursday in April since 1993 that provides exciting and creative opportunities to introduce young women ages 9 to 15 to a variety of jobs and to the contributions unions have made in the lives of working women; and
RESOLVED, that the AFT encourage school districts to participate by allowing girls to participate in workplace programs during the school day; and
RESOLVED, that the AFT encourage schools to provide activities for girls and boys that address gender stereotypes, the worth of work inside and outside the home, and the benefits of balancing work and family responsibilities; and
RESOLVED, that the AFT urge school and union employees to volunteer as mentors for the day and urge locals to provide activities for girls to introduce them to the power of union women and the difference that unions make in the lives of working women. (Executive Council)
