AFT Resolution

FUNDING FOR AFT DISASTER RELIEF

WHEREAS, the devastating impact of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma requires action by the AFT to assist what is expected to be 10,000 members in need; and

WHEREAS, the AFT has provides significant financial support to assist our state and local affiliates that have been adversely affected by these natural disasters; and

WHEREAS, the current AFT budget does not have the capacity to meet the expected $6 million in unanticipated funds needed to assist in this effort; and

WHEREAS, the AFT has been assisted by state and local affiliates in raising $1 million for the relief effort:

RESOLVED, that up to $5 million be contributed from our unrestricted reserves in the Militancy/Defense Fund to cover the shortfall of the AFT Disaster Relief Fund. [Executive Council, February 2006]
