WASHINGTON—AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement congratulating Nicole Berner after she was confirmed by the Senate to serve as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit:

“Ms. Berner’s sense of fairness and judicial temperament will serve the nation well for years to come. She is not only a brilliant, highly esteemed attorney, she is an extremely measured and thoughtful legal mind, with the highest ethical standards and the rare ability to bring people together and forge compromise, even across vast differences of perspective.

“It is crucial to have the judges on our federal bench reflect the diversity of our country, both in their personal and professional lives. As a lawyer who has represented working people for most of her professional career, Ms. Berner brings a unique and important perspective to the federal bench.

“Throughout her work, she has demonstrated a commitment to restoring trust in America’s constitutional system of government, which has suffered numerous body blows from ideological appointees and extremist politicians.

“The American people will be better off with Nicole Berner on the bench. I wish her well and extend my warm congratulations and those of the 1.7 million members of the AFT.”
