AFT’s Weingarten on UNLV Mass Shooting

WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement after a mass shooting on the campus of University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where the union represents faculty and staff members of the Nevada Faculty Alliance/AFT chapter:

“Today, we must stop and mourn with the UNLV community, as we have done with far too many others. We cannot become desensitized to the epidemic of mass shootings in this country because they happen so often.

“Today we mourn; tomorrow we take action—for commonsense gun reforms, including removing weapons of war from our streets and communities, enforcing background checks and safe storage laws, banning high-capacity magazines and passing more extreme risk protection laws.

“It is not lost on any of us that this, the 39th mass shooting in the United States this year, occurred on the same day as the 11th annual National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence being held in Washington, D.C.

“At this hour, we are reaching out to the community at UNLV with support and resources. Our hearts are with them.”
