WASHINGTON—AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement after Judge Janet Protasiewicz was declared the winner in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election:
“After 15 years of Republican control of the state Supreme Court, Wisconsinites have come together to elect Judge Janet Protasiewicz—a smart, committed jurist who is devoted to upholding our freedoms and the rule of law in the state’s highest court. Educators, healthcare workers and public employees across the state turned out for Judge Protasiewicz and mobilized across the state’s grass-roots organizations to knock on doors, text message voters and get out the vote in record numbers for this special election.
“Over the next few years, Wisconsin’s Supreme Court will rule on several landmark cases that will have repercussions for families across the state, including the ability to access reproductive care, and the drawing of fair electoral maps that reflect the will of the voters, not a partisan political agenda.
“Justice-elect Protasiewicz’s election represents a huge win for fairness, justice and the democratic ideals the people of Wisconsin support.”
