The election results are in, and AFT delegates have re-elected their three leading officers: President Randi Weingarten, Secretary-Treasurer Lorretta Johnson and Executive Vice President Mary Cathryn Ricker. Weingarten was first elected in 2008 and so marks her 10th year as president. Johnson was first elected secretary-treasurer in 2011, and Ricker was first elected executive vice president in 2014.
In addition to the leading officers, 43 AFT vice presidents were elected (see list at bottom of this article).
The three top AFT officers have led the organization through some of the most challenging times in recent memory, not only for our union but for all organized labor. During the past 18 months, they have navigated the aftermath of the Trump election and the resulting surge in anti-union sentiment. They have guided the union through a full program of preparation for the landmark Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court decision and turned what could have been a devastating blow into an organizing opportunity. And they have urged on members and affiliates as they’ve built their own local unions, increasing membership numbers and membership engagement in the face of unprecedented challenges.
With the recent passage of three resolutions designed to increase and focus the power of the union, the officers will continue that work, helping other leaders and rank-and-file members find creative ways to continue the work of building membership and crafting a sure future for the union.
