Oregon nurses collect donated school supplies

With back to school right around the corner, members from the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals recently held a school supply drive with the goal of sending 100 Portland-area children back to their classes with everything they need to succeed.

Historic turnout for the OFNHP’s July 29 membership meeting yielded a truckload of donated pencils, backpacks, colored pencils, scissors, notebooks and more.

“As health professionals, we care deeply for our community, and we want to show it by giving back at every opportunity,” explains OFNHP President Adrienne Enghouse, who is a registered nurse. “Education is fundamental to a healthy community. We want to set kids up for success, and a good education is fundamental to their health.”

OFNHP donated the supplies to Don’t Shoot PDX, a grass-roots campaign that emerged in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, with deep ties in the community and a social-justice orientation. Don’t Shoot PDX will distribute the items to families in need at a community potluck event at the end of August.
